From the Editor
Welcome to our new
format! If youve noticed the change in our name and
appearance, thats goodyoure paying attention! In
November, we amicably parted editorial company with
Profiles International, who now publishes their own
newsletter with a somewhat different flavor, under the
name we both formerly used, Employers Advantage.
Freed from the rigors of their publishing schedule, and
needing a break to refresh my own perspective, we had a
publishing hiatus for a couple of months, but are now back
in the saddle, ready to launch our new name and aims, with
Volume 5, Issue 1 of Performance Advantage. Our intent is
to publish on a loosely monthly schedule, and to aim
squarely at writings that will be useful to you in
managing your business and the changing workforce. Feel
free to send feedback or contributions to newsletter@prol.ws

Aging
and The Workforce: A True Paradigm Shift!
Paradigm Shift-noun-A
complete change in thinking or belief systems that allows
the creation of a new condition previously thought
impossible or unacceptable. (The Bridgefield Group)
Author and futurist Ken Dychtwald, with his colleagues at
Age Wave, has outlined what he believes is a true paradigm
shift in the composition and behavior of the workforce, a
shift just beginning to gather strength. In a series of
books, cumulating with Workforce Crisis,
Dychtwald lays out the causes, consequences, and some of
the possible responses to the challenges business owners
and their managers and HR people will face as a result of
this shift.

Internet
Recruiting: Everybody's Doing It Finally!
Internet
Recruiting: After a great deal of resistance, online
hiring surpassed more traditional sources for the first
time. Accounting firm Booz Allen Hamilton found
the Internet accounted for 51 percent of all new hires,
overtaking newspaper classified advertising and job fairs.
They found 21 percent of new hires generated through
corporate Web sites, and another 21 percent through job
boards. Only 5 percent of new hires originated with
classified ads.

Head &
Shoulders...Above Your Competition
As business communications have become
increasingly electronic (and often automated), handwritten, personal communication has
increased in value. Overcome your personal devotion to
efficiency and ease; you may want to consider some very
simple ways you can re-introduce handwritten
communications to your portfolio of business-builders. Try
carrying a few pre-stamped postcards in your briefcase.
When youre standing in line, taking off on an airline,
or otherwise trapped in a mostly nonproductive time warp,
pull out your cards and write a few lines to a client,
prospect or referral source. A handwritten note from you
will separate you from the pack, as your prospect teeters
on the brink of a decision.

Moving Company
Moves to Assessments to Stem Turnover
This
nationally franchised moving firm has steadily grown from
its college-boy beginnings to a national power in the
local and business moving industry. The nature of the work
(hard physical labor, demanding consumers, dealing with
unpleasant weather), however, contributes to a relatively
high early failure rate for new hires. For this north
central US franchisee, only one out of three new hires
from the 2006 calendar year were still employed at the end
of the year! The owners wanted to do something to improve
their new-hire success rate, but were skeptical about
whether assessments could make a major impact. A
demonstration was undertaken, using the Step One Survey IITM,
provided by Profiles International, Inc. All prospective
hires during the year completed the 20- minute,
internet delivered assessment during the pre-hire process.
